Vienna’s Festwochen show a breathtaking cultural program during six weeks in May and June. The greats of the international culture scene are represented annually at the Vienna Festwochen.
For the 2012 Vienna Festwochen, a total of 40 productions of various diverse matter are all on the plan: opera, concerts, theater and performances. Venues are the Museumsquartier, Kunsthalle, Vienna Konzerthaus and many others. As a tradition, the opening of the Vienna Festwochen is held as an open event, free of admission, at the Rathausplatz.
The Vienna Festwochen 2012 will take place from 11th May to 17th June, the programme for 2012 will be announced shortly.
Highlights of the Vienna Festwochen 2011
This year's Vienna's Festwochen were opened on 13th May at the Rathausplatz square. The symphonic orchestra of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation ORF will accompany artists like Genia Kühmeier, Michael Schade or Robert Holl during open-air concerts. From that day on events will take place daily at several of the 17 locations. The programme of the musical theatre will be opened on the Karlsplatz square by the performance of Orestreia by Iannis Xenakis.
Like last year a further literature Nobel prize winner - Toni Morrison - gives attention to the role of women with the "Desdemona project", together with the African singer Rokia Traorè and stage director Peter Sellars. Point of origin is the role of Desdemona in Shakespeare's "Othello" from 2009.
