Gustav Klimt and his work
The great artist and his Vienna
Particularly famous is Klimt’s “Golden Period”, when he painted “The Kiss”. But there will be many more popular works from the art nouveau era shown even after his anniversary year.
Summer resort on the Attersee lake
It was very common for the Viennese people to spend their summer holiday in the Salzkammergut, as did Gustav Klimt. His favourite lake was the Attersee. It was here, where he relaxed, far away from the busy city, and found new inspiration. Many of his landscape paintings were created on the Attersee in the years 1900 to 1916.
The great Austrian exponent from the art nouveau era was also popular for his female portraits. Gustav Klimt has never been married, but he had his affairs, mainly with his female models. The painting, showing his long-term girlfriend Emilie Flöge, is considered to be one of the most popular portraits of all time, as well as “Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer”.
The Golden Period
During this era the artist’s real world and the mystical world got mixed up. The period lasted from 1901 to 1910. Apart from works like Danae, Judith I and Judith II, The Kiss is the most popular painting by Gustav Klimt. He painted it in 1907 and it is now owned by the Belvedere gallery, where it can also be seen.
